What actually fails in a furnace that barely runs
A furnace on the Gulf coast lives a strange life. It might run for three or four cold snaps a year and sit shut off in a closet or attic the rest of the time, which means the failures we see in Humble and Kingwood are rarely the cracked heat exchanger that ends a northern furnace's life. They are the parts that sat still too long: a direct spark ignition module and sensor that has not fired since last February, a draft inducer motor stiff from a summer of disuse, a gas valve that hesitates on the first call for heat.
The symptom is usually the thermostat calling for heat and nothing happening, or a furnace that fires, runs for a minute, and shuts back down. Both point at the ignition and safety chain rather than the heat exchanger itself, and both are exactly why a system gets checked before the freeze arrives, not during it.

How we diagnose it, and what goes in
A pre-season visit works through the same checklist as a maintenance tune up: the heat exchanger, the insulated blower compartment, the direct spark ignition and its sensor, thermostat operation, electrical connections tightened and tested, and the safety controls that are supposed to shut the system down if something is genuinely wrong rather than just inconvenient.
New installs go in at 80% AFUE in a low profile 34 inch cabinet with a stainless or aluminized heat exchanger. Better steps up to a two stage fan motor. Best runs an ECM variable speed blower with constant volume airflow, a two stage high and low fire burner, a slow open gas valve and a draft inducer motor built for that specific staging, and it works with either a single stage or a two stage thermostat. Why the pre-season check matters more here than up north
A furnace that runs a few weeks a year does not wear out. It seizes up. Every part of the ignition and safety chain is happiest running often, and a Gulf coast furnace is asked to do the opposite, sit for months and then perform without warning on the one morning temperatures actually drop. That is the whole argument for a fall check instead of letting a February freeze be the test.
The heat exchanger carries a twenty year warranty, with five years on the rest of the parts, so a well maintained furnace is not really a short lived purchase even at 80% AFUE. What shortens its life is the opposite of overuse: skipping the one visit a year that would have caught a stiff draft inducer motor before it stopped turning altogether.
