Cooling a House in Gulf Coast Humidity: Why the Fan Setting Matters as Much as the Temperature
Two houses can sit at the same 74 degrees and feel completely different. The difference is almost always humidity, not temperature.

Around Humble, Kingwood and Atascocita, the complaint we hear most often is not really about temperature. It is some version of the house feeling clammy or sticky even though the thermostat says it is doing its job. That feeling is humidity, and cooling a house properly here means dealing with it directly, not just chasing a number on the wall.
Two different jobs, one machine
An air conditioner does two jobs at once. It removes sensible heat, which is the part you can measure with a thermometer, and it removes latent heat, which is the moisture in the air. A system sized and run purely to hit a temperature number fast will often short-cycle: it cools the air quickly, shuts off, and never runs long enough on any one cycle to pull much moisture out along the way. The house reaches 74 degrees and still feels damp, because the humidity problem was never actually addressed.
Why the fan setting matters
This is one of the simplest things a homeowner can control, and it is on the energy tips we publish for exactly this reason: use the thermostat fan on the auto setting rather than leaving it running continuously. When the fan runs on auto, it only moves air while the compressor is actively cooling, so the coil stays cold and wet and keeps wringing moisture out of the air the whole time. Leave the fan running after the compressor shuts off, and the blower starts blowing air across a coil that is now warming back up, which re-evaporates some of the moisture the system just pulled out and puts it right back into the house.
Where on-demand dehumidification fits in

It lets the system run a cycle aimed specifically at moisture removal rather than only chasing the setpoint. In a climate where the outdoor dew point is regularly in the 70s for months at a time, that is not a luxury feature. It is the difference between a house that feels cool and a house that is merely cold.
Sizing matters more than people expect
An oversized system makes this problem worse, not better. A unit that is too big for the house cools the air to the setpoint so quickly that it shuts off before it has run long enough to pull real humidity out, the same short-cycling problem described above, just built into the equipment from day one instead of caused by a fan setting. That is one reason we look at the whole house, the ductwork and the insulation before recommending a tier or a tonnage rather than simply matching the number on the old unit's nameplate. A correctly sized two-stage system that runs longer at its low stage will out-dehumidify an oversized single-stage system every time, even if the oversized one technically has a higher SEER rating on paper.
The rest of the equation
- Set the thermostat to 78 degrees in summer rather than chasing a lower number. Every degree colder than that costs more to run for a marginal comfort gain, and a well-dehumidified 78 degree room usually feels better than a poorly dehumidified 74 degree one.
- Keep doors and windows closed and vents and grilles unobstructed, so the system is conditioning a sealed volume of air rather than fighting outside humidity leaking in.
- Go easy on kitchen and bathroom exhaust fans. They pull conditioned, dehumidified air straight out of the house and pull humid outside air in to replace it.
- Keep the outdoor condenser coil clear of grass clippings, leaves and dirt with a garden hose. A coil caked in debris cannot reject heat properly, which is the first step of the whole dehumidification process.
If a room never feels right
