What a 16, 18 or 20 SEER Quote Actually Buys You

When we hand a customer a quote for a new air conditioner, we hand over three options: Good, Better and Best. Most people look straight at the price, then at the SEER number, and try to figure out which one to pick from those two figures alone. That is understandable, but it skips almost everything the higher tiers are actually built around. The SEER rating is a starting point, not the whole story.

What SEER measures

SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. It is a measure of how much cooling a system produces for the electricity it uses over a full season, not just at one instant. A higher number means the system is squeezing more cooling out of the same amount of power. It does not tell you how the system gets there, and in a climate like ours, how it gets there matters as much as the destination.

The three tiers we quote

• Good: up to 16.00 SEER, R410a refrigerant, lifetime cabinetry, a louvered coil cover, a 10 year compressor warranty and a 5 year warranty on other parts.
• Better: up to 18.00 SEER, the same R410a and lifetime cabinetry, a 10 year warranty on all parts, a comfort control system with comfort alert diagnostics, a two-stage scroll compressor, on-demand dehumidification and a variable-speed condenser motor.
• Best: up to 20.00 SEER, the same lifetime cabinetry and 10 year all-parts warranty, the two-stage scroll compressor and on-demand dehumidification, plus an ECM two-speed condenser motor for the highest efficiency in the lineup.

What a two-stage scroll compressor actually changes

A single-stage compressor has one setting: full blast, then off. It comes on, runs at full capacity until the house hits the set temperature, then shuts off completely, and the cycle repeats. A two-stage scroll compressor has a low stage it can run at most of the time, and only steps up to full capacity on the hottest afternoons. Running longer at a lower stage does two things a short full-blast cycle cannot. It keeps the air moving and filtering more continuously, and it pulls more moisture out of the air, because a coil has to run for a while before it starts wringing humidity out effectively. A system that turns off after twelve minutes never gets there.

The variable-speed condenser motor

The condenser motor is the fan on the outdoor unit, and on the Better and Best tiers it steps or varies its speed to match what the compressor is doing rather than running flat out every time the system fires. Paired with a two-stage compressor, it lets the whole system idle along quietly on a mild day and only ramp up when it needs to. Customers usually notice this as a quieter unit in the yard and steadier temperatures room to room, since the system is not lurching between full-on and full-off.

On-demand dehumidification

This is the feature that matters most here specifically, more than in a dry climate. On-demand dehumidification lets the system run in a mode aimed at pulling moisture out of the air even when the temperature itself is already close to the setpoint. In a Humble summer, humidity is often the thing making a room feel uncomfortable at 74 degrees, not the temperature reading. Both the Better and Best AC tiers, and the Better and Best furnace tiers, include this feature, because it matters in both seasons here.

What it means for your bill

We are not going to hand you a made-up savings percentage, because it depends on your house, your ductwork, your insulation and how the old system was running before it died. Picking a tier for your house
